Newsom Orders Homeless Encampments Removed

Governor Faces Backlash

TALE OF TWO CITIES

Tonight, the 2024 Summer Olympics will officially begin in Paris, marking a historic moment for the Summer Games. For the first time, athletes will travel by boat along the Seine River instead of parading in an arena, promising a spectacular opening ceremony.

The next Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2028, with opening ceremonies likely at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. However, much work is needed to rejuvenate this once-glorious city, currently struggling with crime, homelessness, and a lack of leadership from city and state leaders.

The Blame Game

That takes us to Governor Newsom who this week issued an executive order to clear homeless encampments across the state.

🔗Newsom said the decision was made after that Supreme Court ruling last month which cleared the way to move forward with the clean up encampments across all California’s cities.

🔗But once again, Newsom didn’t make himself available to the media to discuss this mandate- he just told all local leaders to get it done via social media.

🔗And he once again, blamed local cities for the homeless mess.

Details of the Order

  • Newsom’s order would direct state agencies on how to remove the thousands of tents and makeshift shelters across the state.

  • The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in the hands of local authorities.

  • While Newsom cannot order local authorities to act, his administration can apply pressure by withholding money for counties and cities.

The Major Challenge

There is no doubt that homelessness is probably the most frustrating issue for all Californians.

  • The state has spent more than $20 billion on the problem during Governor Newsom’s terms and yet the crisis grows.

  • Right now about 181,000 Californians are living on the street.

The Political Backlash

  • Republicans called it a publicity stunt and criticized Newsom for not going far enough on enforcement.

  • And Democrats are calling it inhumane, saying it is not fixing the problem for the 180-thousand people who are unhoused in the state.

“Newsom’s plan to displace and dispossess unhoused people, even though the state does not have enough housing, is a cruel tactic that only masks the problem”

SAN FRANCISCO POLICE OFFICER “HEFTY” PAY PROPOSAL

San Francisco leaders are proposing a program to offer some veteran police officers hefty pay increases to entice them to keep working past their retirement. Mike Netter Breaks it down:

FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS CHARGING FOR BAGS

Fast food restaurants in Los Angeles are now allowed to charge customers for paper bags, perhaps due to the high costs of operating their businesses in the state.

Quick Catchup

📌Fast-food restaurants are allowed to do this after city leaders voted to extend the 2013 single-use plastic bag ban on grocery stores to fast-food restaurants.

📌This is for to-go orders only (or through the drive-thru line).

📌Restaurant workers will ask if you want to pay for a paper bag at $.10 a pop or they will give your order piece by piece.
