Trump’s SoCal Trip Ignites Old Feuds, Opens Tabloid Fodder and Sidesteps Cali Border Issue

In case you missed it, Friday afternoon at his golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, former President Donald Trump delivered a spirited, hour-long news conference—his first since facing off with Vice President Harris in their heated Tuesday debate.

‘Spirited’ News Conference

Mr. Trump took aim at the usual suspects, VP Harris, the fake news/ABC News moderators, calling them biased and unfair, and of course, Governor Newsom who he repeatedly disparaged by calling “Newscum”.

Mass Deportation Threats but Not in California…

Mr. Trump declared victory in the debate and doubled down on his promise for mass deportations, specifically targeting Ohio and Colorado. Oddly enough, California—one of the country’s hottest immigration battlegrounds—was left out of his plans, at least for now. So why skip California? It could have something to do with the backlash over Trump’s recent claim that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. (No, we won’t wade into that debate here—you can find those details elsewhere.) But Mr. Trump did circle back to California in other ways, and not without controversy.

Political Vendenttas vs. Federal Fire Aid

In classic fashion, Mr. Trump took a swing at Governor Newsom, saying if he’s elected in November, he would cut off federal firefighting aid to the state unless Newsom gets in line with his policies on water rights and taxes. Governor Newsom wasted no time firing back on social media.

Not exactly a well-timed threat on Trump’s part, considering California is currently scorched by wildfires, with thousands of people displaced, dozens of homes lost, and firefighters injured battling the flames.

And if this feels like déjà vu, it’s because Mr. Trump has been here before, threatening to withhold disaster relief over California’s environmental policies (this stems from the ongoing farmers-versus-smelt fish battle in the Central Valley).

What about a Steve Garvey Endorsement?

But the real curveball came when Mr. Trump turned his attention to none other than U.S. Senate candidate and former MLB star Steve Garvey. Republican Garvey, campaigning for the Senate in deep-blue California, has kept his distance from Trump’s MAGA brand. This is of course by design. Trump had a stark warning: Garvey has “no chance” of winning against Democrat Adam Schiff without MAGA support.

Loomer in the Limelight

The tabloid moment of the hour, though, came when reporters grilled Mr. Trump about ultra-right-wing activist Laura Loomer and her growing influence on his campaign. If there was ever a press conference reality TV moment, this was it.

What happens next? Stay tuned. One thing’s for sure: things will only get more interesting before November 5.
