Trump: ‘I’m not Supposed to be Here’

In his first interview since the assassination attempt on his life, former President Trump says he wants to reinforce a sense of unity among Americans when he gives his speech at this week’s Republican National Convention.

Trump spoke with the Washington Examiner late last night, exclusively about the near-fatal attack on his life and the impact its had since.

Doug Mills/NYT

After the gunman fired off the near-fatal shots Saturday, Trump said when he stood up and saw the crowd had not moved, he needed to tell them that he and the country were going to be OK. “The energy coming from the people there in that moment, they just stood there; it’s hard to describe what that felt like, but I knew the world was looking. I knew that history would judge this, and I knew I had to let them know we are OK.”

THE SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

Investigators have not released a motive yet for the 20-year-old suspect, a man who lived near the site of the shooting in Pennsylvania.

  • FBI has identified him as Thomas Matthew Clark, 20-years-old.

  • His father had purchased the weapon, legally, a semi-automatic rifle, at least six months before.

  • CNN reports he bought 50 rounds of ammunition right before the attack.

  • Explosive material was found in his car and home.

  • The suspect does not have a criminal history.

  • CNN: the US Secret Service did not sweep the building where the shooter perched but instead relied on local law enforcement to conduct security at that location.

THE SHOOTING VICTIM AND SURVIVORS

Three adult men were shot in Saturday’s rally - a father of two was killed.

David Dutch 57- a veteran of the Marine Corps, is undergoing another surgery this week. He’s expected to survive.

James Copenhaver 74, was also wounded. His family says he will be okay. Mr. Copenhaver is also a registered Democrat and wanted to hear Mr. Trump for himself.

Finally, Corey Comperatore, a retired fire chief and father of two was murdered as he shielded his family from the hail of gunfire. Mike has the statement from his daughter:

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Republican National Convention starts today in Wisconsin under heavy security.

And we still don’t know who will be Trump’s choice for Vice President. That will be the big headline out of there is week, along with Trump’s decision to make the RNC more “unifying” in the wake of the assassination attempt on his life.

Besides those major headlines, the RNC should make some big changes with its platform.

PLATFORM

📌The Republican Party will adopt a new platform that softens its language on abortion and says the issue should be determined by individual states.

📌 A missile defense shield over the U.S.- kind of like what Israel has.

📌Some kind of tax cut plan for Americans who are hurting badly with the economy.

📌A focus on border security and mass deportations of people who are in the U.S. illegally.
