Newsom in DC to Secure Funds for CA's Fight Against Trump Policies- What's on his "To-Do" List?

Battle for the House

One week after election day, control of the House of Representatives remains undecided, and California is set to play a pivotal role in determining the balance of power in Congress.

Here’s where it stands as of Tuesday morning:

With eight crucial races still pending in California’s fiercely contested congressional districts, the battle for control of the House will remain uncertain until the final calls are made.

Big Loss for Republicans

In California's 27th Congressional District, encompassing Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley, incumbent Republican Representative Mike Garcia has conceded defeat to Democrat George Whitesides. Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot and the last Republican congressman anchored in heavily Democratic Los Angeles County, acknowledged his loss and committed to a smooth transition. This outcome is significant, as Republicans were counting on Garcia's victory to maintain their foothold in the region.

Whitesides is a former Virgin Galactic CEO who also served as NASA chief of staff during the Obama administration.

California ‘Resistance’

By now, it’s no surprise that Governor Gavin Newsom is gearing up to make California the leader of the resistance against President Trump’s second term. Does he have the full support of voters? Well, that’s something else entirely.

Right now, Newsom is in Washington, D.C., meeting with Biden administration officials to lock down federal funding and “Trump-proof” the state before January.

Following President Trump's decisive victory last week Governor Newsom called for California lawmakers to convene a special session on December 2 to what he calls “safeguard the state's progressive policies” ahead of the Republican's second term in the White House. You can listen to his detailed explanation here.

Newsom “To-Do List”

Yesterday, Newsom traveled to Washington, D.C., where he is reportedly lobbying President Biden for substantial funding and assistance in several key areas:

📌Climate and Clean Air Rules: Pushing for critical EPA waivers so California will phase out gas-powered cars, trucks, and trains to electric vehicles.

📌A Climate and COVID Double-Punch: Newsom’s also seeking federal approval for California’s climate rules and a hefty $5.2 billion reimbursement for emergency COVID-19 spending.

📌Disaster Aid Backups: Newsom is eyeing a backup plan to cover potential shortfalls in disaster aid reimbursements. He wants to put aside a chunk of California’s budget just in case Trump’s administration tightens the purse strings when it comes to covering damage from the state’s many fires, floods and quakes.

📌High-Speed Rail Drama: And we can’t forget California’s high-speed rail project. It’s already under the microscope, and with Trump back in the mix, it’s facing an even bigger funding question mark (the state needs billions to finish the project).

📌Mental Health and Medicaid Expansion: Last but not least, Newsom will be pressing the Biden administration to green-light California’s use of Medicaid funding for expanded mental health services—targeting those who are homeless or at serious risk.

Trump Responds

President Trump wasn’t silent on the matter. Taking to social media, he responded: “He (Newsom) is using ‘Trump-Proof’ as a way of stopping all the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again.

GOP Revival?

While Vice President Kamala Harris easily won California and Adam Schiff secured the vacant Senate seat, the 2024 election hinted at some surprising shifts in the state's political tone. President Trump made significant gains compared to his 2016 and 2020 runs, flipping traditionally populated blue counties like Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside.

Progressive leaders also took some hard hits.

  • In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed was unseated, with many pointing to the public's frustration over issues like crime and homelessness.

  • Over in Los Angeles County, District Attorney George Gascón was replaced by Nathan Hochman, an independent (former GOP) who campaigned on more conservative criminal justice policies.

  • And then there’s Proposition 36, which passed and brings stricter penalties for certain crimes—another sign of voters leaning toward tougher law enforcement.

Why You Should Care

These developments indicates that not all voters may align with the so-called "Resistance" movement. Consequently, the upcoming special legislative session could become a focal point for these emerging political dynamics.
