The Trump Interview

Over the weekend, Trump appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he suggested that members of Congress who investigated the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection—Schiff included—should be imprisoned. Schiff served on the January 6 committee and led Trump’s first impeachment trial, making him a frequent Trump target. Trump also hinted at the possibility of pardoning Capitol rioters from that day.

Schiff Response

Schiff defended the January 6 committee’s work, stating, "We are proud of what we did," but he also took shots at Trump, underscoring the stark divide between the two and the ongoing political fallout from the events of January 6.

Biden's Potential Role

  • Trump’s statements have raised questions about whether President Biden might take steps to shield lawmakers like Schiff and former Representative Liz Cheney before leaving office.

  • Schiff, however, has expressed concerns about preemptive pardons, cautioning against their potential implications.
