First off… The Big News 👇
CALIFORNIA ACTION 🚨THIS IS THE WEEK
The California Legislature returns from its summer recess this week, and the next month may be one of the most consequential in recent memory.
Here is the major issue we are watching:
A Redistricting Power Grab by Gavin Newsom and Sacramento Politicians
Last week Governor Newsom held a press conference to officially announce his "Election Rigging Response Act" and it is hard to imagine something more Orwellian. In order to "save democracy," he claims we need to put Sacramento politicians back in charge of drawing Congressional districts and throw out the maps drawn by the voter-approved Independent Redistricting Commission. Thankfully voters will have the final say and so far they are not buying into his scheme.
They have tried this before… Here is a history lesson 👇

According to the latest polling by Politico, voters favor keeping the Independent Redistricting Commission by a margin of two to one.
However, this won't stop the Governor and Supermajority from doing everything in their power to mislead voters to get the result they want. One strategy will be the use of a deceptive ballot title and summary that claims this measure does not empower politicians and overturn the will of the people.
You can help by making your voices heard and submitting your objections to the Assembly's public comment portal here.
If you watched Gavin Newsom’s speech last week at a rally done with state funds, which is illegal, it was a weird campaign push for him and NOT about California.

Gavin Newsom May Face His Own Plan Exploding
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Gavin Newsom is leading a contentious campaign to redraw California’s congressional districts outside of the voter-approved independent commission, aiming to secure more Democratic seats as a countermeasure to Republican-led gerrymandering in Texas.
His strategy involves pushing a constitutional amendment via the legislature and a special November 2025 election, effectively bypassing the existing nonpartisan redistricting process.
While supporters cast the effort as a defense of democratic norms, critics—including Arnold Schwarzenegger and GOP lawmakers—label it a blatant power grab that undermines voter intent and transparency.
The initiative has sparked legal challenges, with lawsuits arguing the fast-track procedure violates constitutional safeguards and erodes public trust.
Though the high-profile maneuver may bolster Newsom’s national reputation and fuel speculation about a presidential bid, it also risks alienating moderate voters who value fairness and independence in elections.
If the measure fails or lawmaking backlash intensifies, the political gambit could severely damage both Newsom’s credibility and California Democrats’ hold on power.
Women in Workplace Failure

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Over the past decade, California poured millions into programs aiming to boost women’s participation in STEM disciplines, including engineering, computer science, mathematics, and statistics.
Despite this substantial investment, progress has been minimal: women’s share of engineering degrees rose only from about 19% to 25%, and computer science from 16% to 23%, while attainment in math and statistics actually declined in recent years.
Experts warn that at this slow pace, reaching gender parity in these fields would take far too long. Observers point to cultural factors—biases, poor representation, and stereotypes—as major barriers, more than any biological limitations.
Meanwhile, federal funding cuts in recent years have further undercut momentum, especially by reducing support for scientific research and education initiatives aimed at women.
With state-funded programs like the Education Learning Laboratory facing budget reductions or being phased out, advocates say revitalized and sustained efforts are urgently needed to create real change and support future innovation.
Gavin Spinning…

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
California Governor Newsom has unveiled the “Election Rigging Response Act,” a legislative effort to bring congressional redistricting back under the control of lawmakers, replacing the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
He pitched it as a response to Republican gerrymandering in Texas, but critics point out that this move would essentially mirror the same tactics under Democratic leadership.
A recent Politico–Citrin Center–Possibility Lab poll shows that just 36% of voters support returning map-drawing authority to legislators, while 64% oppose the change—a major challenge Newsom can’t spin away.
The proposed redistricting plan targets several GOP-held districts, aiming to reduce Republican representation from nine seats to as few as four.
This aggressive strategy has triggered sharp backlash from both GOP leaders and disaffected Democrats, who view it as a cynical grab for power.
Should the measure fail or generate continued voter mistrust, it risks inflicting serious political damage on Newsom’s credibility and California Democrats’ electoral prospects.
How Will You Be Affected by The New Districts?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a new congressional map that would be placed on the November 2025 ballot, aiming to add five more Democratic-leaning districts through a legislative override of the citizen redistricting commission.
This shift means many Californians might find themselves represented by someone they didn’t originally vote for, as district lines may shift significantly.
The proposed redistricting effort is a direct response to Republican-led gerrymandering in states like Texas, and it would temporarily transfer redistricting power back to the Legislature.
If approved by voters in the special election, the new lines would take effect for the 2026 through 2030 election cycles.
To help Californians understand the impact, CalMatters has created a tool that lets users see whether their district—and their vote—would be affected.
The stakes are high: this move could reshape political representation across the state and influence broader control of the U.S. House.

Independent Voters Could Decide Fate of Newsom’s Redistricting Push
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Governor Newsom is advancing a proposal to redraw California’s congressional districts via a legislative initiative placed on the November 2025 ballot—sidestepping the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
This mid-decade redistricting move, dubbed the “Election Rigging Response Act” by critics, is framed as retaliation to Republican-led redistricting efforts in places like Texas.
Petitioning for the special election is underway now that the state legislature has returned from recess, setting an aggressive timeline.
Public sentiment remains clear: a recent poll shows 64% of Californians stand behind the independent commission, making this a steep uphill battle for Newsom.
Former Governor Schwarzenegger and Charles Munger Jr., among others who previously backed independent mapping, are rallying to preserve the system.
But their ranks are divided, as some reform advocates shift their support based on political calculations—illustrating the complex dynamics shaping this high-stakes showdown over how district lines will be drawn.
California Republicans Sue to Stop Newsom, Democrats From Pushing Redistricting Plan

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Four Republican state lawmakers have filed suit in the California Supreme Court to halt Governor Newsom’s fast-tracked congressional redistricting plan, which aims to increase Democratic U.S. House seats by five.
They argue that the legislature violated the state constitution by bypassing a mandated 30-day public review period, effectively shutting voters out of the legislative process.
The lawsuit requests the court to block the redistricting bills until September 18 or require a three-fourths legislative vote to proceed sooner.
This legal move comes just as the legislature races to pass the redistricting package ahead of an August 22 deadline needed to place the plan on the November ballot.
Supporters portray the effort as a necessary countermove to Republican gerrymandering in Texas, while critics call it a partisan power grab.
The lawsuit marks a critical legal challenge that could delay or derail Newsom’s strategy to shift congressional power dynamics in California.
