Newsom Calls Special Session to 'Trump Proof' California against Growing Red Wave

President Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States almost 48 hours ago, and already, California Governor Newsom has declared war on the next Trump Presidency—today, declaring, “California is ready to fight.”

Special Legislative Session

Newsom has called for a special legislative session- to effectively “Trump Proof” the state. What does that mean? Well, he’s urging state lawmakers to protect the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights, and immigration.

Governor Newsom once again used social media for this announcement, leaving the specifics unclear.

Motives Questioned

Newsom's call to action has reignited the California Democratic Supermajority's well-known resistance to conservative policies, but it has also raised questions about his motives

Deeper Issues at Play?

Despite Newsom’s outspoken criticism of Trump, the current political landscape in California suggests deeper issues at play.

  • State officials are preparing for a potentially more organized Trump administration and a complex political landscape.

  • Trump could have more support from California law enforcement and local politicians this second term, especially in the counties where he has a large voter base such as the Central Valley, Inland Empire, and Orange County.

Growing Red Wave

But perhaps the biggest issue right now- is the current look electoral map. Could this also be part of the reason why Newsom wants all the Democrats back to Sacramento?

  • With ballots still being counted, it shows Trump leading in several significant California counties ( the Secretary of State’s official website has Trump/GOP as orange Not red- coincidence?).

    • Notably, Trump is ahead in San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange counties—highly populated areas that are essential to the state’s political makeup.

What’s Next

  • The special session will start on December 2 in Sacramento.

  • As of this writing, President Trump hasn’t responded to Governor Newsom’s actions.
