California Assemblyman David Tangipa is pushing for reforms to the state’s $30 billion per year In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program after an investigation revealed weaknesses in oversight and fraud-detection, particularly because the program pays family members to provide care without unannounced verification visits.
Tangipa highlighted that the program has accounted for a significant share of California’s job growth since Governor Newsom took office, with nearly 800,000 providers paid through taxpayer funds and many working from home.
Current IHSS protocols explicitly prevent random, surprise checks, which critics argue makes it difficult to confirm that support workers are actually providing the services being billed.
He pointed to data suggesting disproportionate enrollment in certain communities and said this raises additional concerns about whether funds are being properly used.

LA County Taxpayers Association Launches Campaign to Defeat County Sales Tax Hike

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 4–1 to place a 0.5% countywide sales tax increase on the June 2026 ballot, which would raise everyday costs for residents if approved.
In response, the LA County Taxpayers Association launched a formal campaign to defeat the tax measure, arguing that it lacks clear protections for how the revenue would be used and simply deposits funds into the county’s general fund without enforceable spending guarantees.
Opponents, including mayors and local officials from across LA County, have signed a letter of opposition, emphasizing concerns about transparency and accountability before asking voters to approve new taxation.
Critics also highlight the county’s already high combined sales tax rate and say the hike would further strain households facing rising housing and living costs.
The association is building a broader coalition of community leaders, business advocates, and taxpayer groups to mobilize opposition before the primary election.
Its leaders insist that if new revenue is genuinely necessary, it should come with defined purposes, oversight, and safeguards instead of giving county officials broad discretion over spending.
Rep. Kiley Requests GAO Report on Staggering Fraud in California

Congressman Kevin Kiley has formally requested that the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) conduct a comprehensive audit of waste, fraud, and abuse involving public funds in California, aiming to quantify and categorize the problem on a statewide level.
