Have We Reached Peak Tax, Spend, and Regulation Insanity?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California’s current fiscal and regulatory environment is described as extreme, with state and local governments imposing high taxes, massive spending programs, and burdensome regulations that many see as pushing residents and businesses to the breaking point.

  • The article argues that these layered costs reduce economic competitiveness, discourage investment, and make everyday life more expensive for families already struggling with housing, energy, and transportation costs.

  • Critics point to repeated budget deficits, growing unfunded liabilities, and expanding bureaucratic mandates as evidence that the state’s policy trajectory is unsustainable.

  • The piece also highlights examples of regulatory overreach that affect industries ranging from energy to agriculture to small business operations, framing these as symptoms of misaligned priorities.

  • Public frustration is presented as rising, with many questioning whether current leaders will reverse course or continue doubling down on policies that few say deliver real results.

  • Ultimately, the article asks whether California has reached a tipping point where voters and policymakers will finally demand restraint in taxing, spending, and regulation.

Judge clears way for mega lawsuit blaming LA and California for deadly Palisades Fire

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • A judge in Los Angeles County Superior Court cleared the way for a major lawsuit to move forward seeking to hold the State of California and the City of Los Angeles civilly liable for alleged failures that contributed to the deadly Palisades Fire, which killed at least 12 people and destroyed thousands of structures.

  • The lawsuits claim that emergency responders left smoldering hot spots from a prior blaze, did not adequately supply water, and failed to shut off power, actions plaintiffs say worsened conditions before the fire spread.

  • The lead attorney for victims argues that altered language in the official after‑action report and other evidence suggests a cover‑up and mishandling by city officials, potentially including political leadership.

  • Insurance companies representing claims for extensive property damage have also joined the litigation, which could expose both government entities to tens of billions in financial liability.

  • The court’s ruling allows the case to proceed into discovery, with more detailed evidence — including firefighter depositions — expected to be revealed during the next phase.

  • Both the city and state deny wrongdoing, and the courtroom battle over responsibility and accountability is set to unfold in the coming months.
