BREAKING NEWS

Adam Schiff Under Investigation

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former President Donald Trump has accused Senator Adam Schiff of mortgage fraud, claiming that Schiff misrepresented his primary residence multiple times to obtain lower interest rates on federally backed home loans.

  • The accusation is based on a confidential Fannie Mae memo that reportedly flagged a pattern of potential mortgage fraud and referred the matter to the Department of Justice.

  • Schiff has denied any wrongdoing, stating that lenders were aware he split his time between Washington, D.C., and California, and dismissed the claims as political retaliation.

  • Legal experts note that while discrepancies in mortgage documents are not uncommon, the public airing of these allegations appears politically motivated, especially given Schiff’s prominent role in Trump’s impeachment.

  • The Fannie Mae memo allegedly documents inconsistencies from 2009 to 2020, but it does not definitively label the conduct as fraudulent.

  • As of now, the DOJ has not confirmed any active investigation into the matter.

The Cost of Trash is Getting Ridiculous

More Trash…

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • San Diego will soon charge single-family homeowners $43.60 per month for trash, recycling, and organic waste pickup, marking a major shift after more than 100 years of free service.

  • The new fees—totaling about $523 annually—come after voters passed Measure B in 2022, but many residents are frustrated that the costs are much higher than originally projected.

  • Each household will receive three large 95-gallon bins, though smaller bin options will be available starting mid-July for reduced rates.

  • City leaders say the fees will free up $80 million from the general fund to support other public services like libraries and road repairs.

  • Critics have filed a lawsuit claiming the measure misled voters and violates Proposition 218 by overcharging residents.

  • The program, set to begin in October, is part of a broader effort to modernize waste services and shift costs away from taxpayers.

California Schools Face Avalanche of Sex Abuse Claims

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California’s 2019 law AB 218 reopened the statute of limitations for childhood sexual assault, allowing victims to file lawsuits many years after the abuse occurred.

  • Since then, public schools across the state have faced nearly $3 billion in claims, with some individual verdicts reaching into the hundreds of millions.

  • Los Angeles Unified School District alone is on track to settle more than $500 million in abuse-related cases.

  • Even districts without direct claims, such as Yosemite Unified, are being charged large insurance assessments to help cover payouts statewide.

  • This financial pressure is pushing many school systems toward insolvency, raising alarms about long-term fiscal stability.

  • A state agency has recommended the creation of a centralized fund to manage future claims and prevent further disruption to local education budgets.

California University Confirms Attempts To Shield Illegal Students, Staff From Deportation

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California State University, Los Angeles has implemented a new policy aimed at shielding students and staff from federal immigration enforcement.

  • The policy designates the campus as a “sanctuary” where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers will be prohibited from entering without a signed warrant.

  • University leadership claims the move is part of their commitment to equity and inclusion, especially for undocumented students.

  • Critics argue it undermines federal law and sets a dangerous precedent by encouraging non-cooperation with immigration authorities.

  • The policy includes training for faculty and staff on how to respond if ICE agents arrive on campus.

  • This decision has sparked renewed debate about the role of public institutions in immigration enforcement.

Orange County’s $649 million Trolley to Nowhere

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Orange County’s OC Streetcar project, a 4.15-mile trolley line from Santa Ana to Garden Grove, has surged in cost from an initial $250 million to $649 million—roughly $156 million per mile.

  • A Grand Jury report criticized the project for poor planning and oversight, with delays caused by environmental issues, utility complications, and the discovery of Native American artifacts.

  • Projected daily ridership of 6,000 to 7,500 is now in question, especially as Santa Ana’s population is shrinking and overall rail ridership in the region has dropped significantly.

  • Local businesses along the route have suffered due to construction disruptions, prompting the city to approve a $1.5 million relief fund.

  • While marketed as a clean, zero-emission alternative, the streetcar’s environmental and traffic benefits are expected to be minimal.

  • Originally scheduled to open in 2021, the line is now delayed until at least spring 2026, raising concerns about government waste and mismanaged infrastructure spending.

Stay Sharp…

  • 78-year-old author Randal Munroe has written over 175 books and attributes his mental sharpness to four core habits.

  • First, he avoids multitasking and focuses deeply on one task at a time to strengthen his brain’s attention span.

  • Second, he maintains a consistent sleep schedule, recognizing that good sleep is critical for memory and cognitive performance.

  • Third, he exercises regularly, noting that physical movement directly benefits mental clarity and energy levels.

  • Fourth, he reads and writes daily, keeping his mind engaged with new information and challenges.

  • Munroe emphasizes that these simple, consistent routines are key to sustaining long-term mental sharpness and creativity.

Caffeine Helps With Aging?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New research suggests caffeine may help slow cellular aging by activating a key protective stress response in the body.

  • Scientists found that caffeine stimulates the same biochemical pathway as caloric restriction and exercise — specifically triggering the integrated stress response (ISR), which promotes cell repair and longevity.

  • This mechanism helps cells adapt to stress, potentially reducing the risk of age-related diseases.

  • The findings support past observations that moderate caffeine consumption is associated with improved metabolic health and reduced mortality.

  • Importantly, the benefits come from activating mild, beneficial stress — not overstimulation.

  • Experts caution that while caffeine can be helpful, it’s best used strategically as part of a healthy lifestyle rather than a substitute for sleep or proper nutrition.

Time Is Killing California: Why Republicans Must Lead on Tax Reform

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California’s punishing tax structure—boasting some of the highest sales and gas taxes in the country—is driving away entrepreneurs, investors, and families.

  • The article argues that these taxes are suffocating economic growth, killing real estate and business investment, and contributing to California’s ongoing decline.

  • While other states like Indiana and North Carolina are cutting income taxes and creating pro-growth environments, California continues to chase revenue through increasingly burdensome taxation.

  • The author urges Republicans to lead on reform by proposing tax structures that cap government growth, flatten brackets, and phase out income taxes over time.

  • A key suggestion includes enabling accelerated depreciation to revitalize stalled commercial real estate projects and encourage development.

  • The piece ends with a call to action: if Republicans want to reverse California’s economic freefall, they must deliver bold, credible tax reform that favors families, business owners, and long-term prosperity.
