First off… The Big News 👇

SWIMMING UPSTREAM AGAINST THE MAINSTREAM

One of the main drivers in publishing Netter News is to get stories out that are either underreported, not reported at all, or what we feel are missing key details

Newsletters like ours, along with Social Media, are the media now.

Here are just some that should be headlines and covered by mainstream news, but aren’t:

BREAKING NEWS

Lower Tax Bills May Be on Horizon for Many Californians

Californians may see lower tax bills due to recent legislation, specifically the increase in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction and potential tax cuts for small businesses. A Republican bill that passed the House includes a SALT deduction increase to $40,000 for those making less than $500,000, which would benefit many Californians. Additionally, a separate bill introduced by Senator Suzette Valladares aims to lower taxes for small businesses in the state.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Increased SALT Deduction:

The "Big Beautiful Bill" (a Republican tax bill) includes a provision to increase the SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 for taxpayers with incomes below $500,000, according to the Sacramento Bee. This would allow Californians to deduct more of their state and local taxes on their federal income tax returns, potentially leading to lower federal tax burdens.

  • Small Business Tax Cuts:

Senator Valladares' bill aims to provide tax relief specifically for small businesses in California, which could help them redirect resources towards growth and innovation.

Under Trump’s Crackdown, a New Crop of Immigrant Rights Groups Rises

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former President Donald Trump has promised to revive and intensify hardline immigration policies if reelected, including mass deportations and expanded use of local law enforcement to assist federal immigration agents.

  • Trump plans to reintroduce controversial measures from his first term, such as broad use of ICE detainers and partnerships with local police, which critics argue violate civil rights and sow fear in immigrant communities.

  • Immigration advocates warn that these proposals would lead to widespread racial profiling and damage public trust in law enforcement.

  • The Supreme Court has upheld certain enforcement tools, but some local governments have resisted cooperating with ICE, setting the stage for potential legal and political battles.

  • Trump’s team says these aggressive measures are necessary to address what they describe as a crisis at the southern border and rising crime.

  • Meanwhile, immigrant rights groups are preparing to mobilize legal and community resistance in anticipation of a potential return to these policies.

Prop 5 Exception Ends for Some Workers

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California lawmakers are advancing a new bill that would make it easier for nail salon workers and other salon professionals to unionize.

  • The measure, supported by labor advocates, targets worker misclassification and aims to address widespread exploitation in the industry.

  • Many salon workers are currently classified as independent contractors, which limits their labor rights and benefits.

  • The bill would reclassify more of these workers as employees, giving them protections like minimum wage guarantees and the right to collectively bargain.

  • Salon owners and industry groups oppose the bill, arguing it threatens small businesses and could drive up costs.

  • The legislation is part of a broader push by Democrats to strengthen labor rights across various low-wage sectors in California.

California Ponders Next Move to Clean Its Air Pollution

California’s air quality rules are facing growing pushback from the public, industry — and even some Democrats in the Legislature — because of the impacts on gas prices and other economic concerns.

Conservatives say the air board is an unelected board that wields too much power. (Its members include appointees from Newsom and the Legislature, and local elected officials.)

A Democrat in the Legislature last month urged Randolph, the board’s chair, to resign because the agency hasn’t analyzed the economic costs of its rules.

One Man’s Resignation Leads to Broken System

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • A Van Nuys Airport advisory committee member resigned and released a scathing letter accusing the airport of ignoring public safety and health concerns.

  • In the letter, the member alleged that airport leadership prioritizes private jet traffic and business interests over community well-being.

  • She criticized the airport for increasing noise pollution and toxic emissions, which she claims harm residents’ quality of life.

  • The letter also cited a lack of transparency and meaningful community engagement in airport decision-making.

  • Neighborhood activists have long expressed frustration over the airport’s growth and its impact on surrounding communities.

  • The resignation has reignited calls for stricter oversight and reforms to better protect public health and safety.

Tax Cuts Delivered — Now Republicans Must Prove They Can Govern

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • A new Republican tax bill has officially delivered significant tax cuts, marking a major legislative victory for the party.

  • The cuts aim to reduce taxes across income brackets, boost business growth, and stimulate the overall economy.

  • While this success gives Republicans a key policy win, the article argues that passing tax cuts alone is not enough to prove they can effectively govern.

  • The author stresses that Republicans must now focus on demonstrating fiscal responsibility and enacting broader policy reforms beyond tax relief.

  • There is also concern that without strong governance, the party could fail to capitalize on this momentum and lose voter trust ahead of upcoming elections.

  • The piece criticizes past Republican tendencies to deliver tax breaks without addressing spending or long-term economic planning.

  • Moving forward, the article suggests that Republicans need to show they can manage budgets, control government growth, and implement coherent strategies for national challenges.

  • Ultimately, it warns that tax cuts are a strong start — but true credibility and sustained success will depend on whether Republicans can lead with discipline and competence.
