Governor Newsom is facing a wave of discontent from Californians: school districts, teachers, parents, and a billionaire who owns several of the state's largest businesses.
The controversy centers around a new law banning schools from requiring that parents be notified if their child identifies as transgender. Critics said school officials do not have the right to keep secrets about their minor children from parents.
QUICK CATCH-UP
đź”—Newsom signed the first-in-the-nation law on Monday.
🔗 It bans districts from requiring school staff to disclose a student’s gender identity or sexual orientation to their parents without the child's permission, with some exceptions.
đź”—Requires the State Department of Education to develop resources for families of LGBTQ+ students in grades 7 through high school.
đź”—After Newsom signed the bill, lawmakers on both sides quickly tried to make their case in the court of public opinion, social media:
This is 100% misleading and demonstratively false. The bill Governor Newsom signed does the following:
ALLOWS schools to hide information about students. They’re playing a word game with “official records” and are not telling you that schools maintain “unofficial records” to… x.com/i/web/status/1…

THE LAWSUITS
The Chino Valley Unified School District, parents, and the Liberty Justice Center have filed separate lawsuits against Governor Newsom challenging the law.
The lawsuits argue the same thing: the new state violates the rights of parents protected under the U.S. Constitution.
THE POLITICS
The political fighting over this new law has not only pitted Democrats against Republicans but it has also thrown one of the richest men in the world into the fray.
Billionaire Elon Musk is vowing to move SpaceX and X headquarters from California to Texas, because of the new law. That sparked a lively back and forth between Musk and the Governor.
This is the final straw.
Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.

But in all seriousness, Musk’s companies employ thousands of people in California. And if he does move the headquarters, that could impact the Golden State’s economy, which is already reeling from a high unemployment rate.

Barring an injunction, the law will take effect in January.

SCHIFF WORRIED ABOUT RE-ELECTION
Democrat Adam Schiff has called on President Biden to drop out of the White House race, citing concerns he can’t beat Donald Trump in November. But is there more at play here?
In a statement, Schiff wrote:
“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch. A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.”
GARVEY OUTRAISES SCHIFF
But let’s take a closer look at another possible reason behind Schiff’s move to oust Biden, someone he has ardently supported.
New campaign finance data reveals that Schiff's opponent for the US Senate in California, Republican Steve Garvey, is out-raising him. Schiff's latest report shows he raised about $4.2 million between April 1 and June 30, while Garvey brought in around $5.4 million during the same period.
Despite this fundraising edge, political experts say Garvey still faces an uphill battle in heavily Democratic California
But with Biden on the ticket in November and Governor Newsom's failed battle over the Prop 47 reform initiative, Democrats are very worried about a potential referendum on Democratic lawmakers in California
Biden Covid
President Biden canceled fundraising in Las Vegas and returned to the White House Wednesday after he tested positive for COVID-19. He reportedly has mild symptoms. Schiff now becomes the 20th Democrat asking for Biden to withdraw from the race
RNC TONIGHT
Tonight marks the grand finale of the Republican National Convention, where former President Donald Trump is set to accept the party's nomination for president.
Trump has said that he had rewritten his acceptance speech in the wake of the Saturday shooting, emphasizing a call for national unity.
The whole Trump family is expected to be there, including Ivanka who hasn’t been out on the campaign trail at all this year.
A nice moment on Wednesday night came when Trump’s oldest granddaughter, Kai Madison Trump, spoke about her “grandpa”.
Quick Catchup- Shooting Investigation
📌CNN reported that the shooter, Thoma Crooks, had an account on the popular gaming platform Steam but they now believe it’s fake, and there’s still no clear motive for Saturday’s attack.
đź“ŚFOX News reports that the parents of the shooter made a distress call to law enforcement Saturday hours before he opened fire on former President Trump.
đź“ŚFOX News also reports law enforcement also had an advanced warning about the gunman as he was identified as suspicious by law enforcement more than an hour before he opened fire.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has been subpoenaed to appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability on July 22 to answer questions about the agency's security lapse at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday where a shooter attempted to kill former President… x.com/i/web/status/1…
