PROP 47 REFORM- THE EMAIL TRAIL

Governor Newsom really doesn’t want voters to have a say on the measure to reform Prop 47 come November. And by really, we mean, Newsom really, really doesn’t want us to vote on the measure.

So much in fact, that new emails have surfaced and it shows that the Governor and top Democratic leaders are refusing to negotiate the package of crime bills unless the Prop 47 reform bill is pulled from the ballot until 2026.

The big question is WHY?

THE EMAIL TRAIL

According to CBS Sacramento: A few days ago, the Governor's Chief of Staff Dana Williamson emailed Prop 47’s lead negotiator Greg Totten to let him know that the Democratic leadership is willing to negotiate on its package of crime bills. She wrote, "As far as an initiative, we are open to something in 2026."

Totten replied, "As I noted previously, our focus is on amending Proposition 47 on the 2024 ballot." adding, "If the administration is prepared to consider an amendment of Proposition 47 on the 2024 ballot, then we are happy to meet."

Williamson responded there was nothing to talk about, adding this insult: "It's really amazing how you are incapable of taking a win. And the consultants you're working with haven't won anything in a decade. Good luck."

DOWN-BALLOT CONCERNS

Some political experts believe that the Democratic opposition to the measure has less to do with combating crime and more to do with concerns over its potential impact on voter turnout and the performance of Democratic candidates on the ballot.

“We can absolutely imagine that there are political reasons why you wouldn't want this on the ballot now. There would be a perception that it could hurt Democrats in down-ballot races, you could have a higher turnout of conservative and moderate voters who are really worried about rising crime rates and who want to weigh in on this.”

QUICK CATCHUP

CELL PHONE BAN IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

Gavin Newsom has announced plans to propose a ban on public school students using cell phones during the school day, citing the mental health risks associated with social media. Los Angeles Unified recently voted to do the same.

This decision is likely to spark considerable interest and debate among parents, teachers, and educators throughout the state.

However, rather than taking this important announcement to all California media, Newsom has only discussed it with one digital outlet that is often friendly to him, offering them an exclusive story.
