California Government Has Been Funding Protests

FBI Raids LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s Home, Office

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Federal agents from the FBI executed court-authorized search warrants at both the Los Angeles Unified School District’s headquarters and the San Pedro home of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho as part of an ongoing federal investigation.

  • Authorities confirmed the warrants were approved by a judge, but details about the focus of the probe and any alleged wrongdoing were not released, as the supporting affidavits are under seal.

  • The Los Angeles Unified School District is the second largest in the United States, serving more than 500,000 students across numerous cities, and Carvalho has led the district since 2022 after previously heading Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

  • Law enforcement officials and the superintendent’s office declined to comment publicly, leaving the community with few specifics about the investigation’s scope or allegations.

  • Footage from the scene showed FBI agents entering Carvalho’s residence with boxes of seized materials, while agents were also seen at the district headquarters early in the morning.

  • The search is part of a developing story, and federal and district officials have not yet disclosed whether any charges have been filed or what the investigation may ultimately reveal.

Private Preschools Drowned by Government in California

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California recently expanded access to free preschool for all 4-year-old children, a major early-education policy pushed by Governor Gavin Newsom and his administration.

  • As a result of that expansion, some private preschool and child-care providers have seen enrollment drop, with previously full classrooms now partially empty because families opt for the publicly funded option instead of paying privately.

  • This shift has strained the financial viability of smaller centers that rely on a mix of older and younger children to cover operating costs and remain open.

  • Newsom’s effort is part of a broader strategy that has tripled state funding for subsidized child care and early childhood programs since 2020, aiming to make care more affordable for working families.

  • However, the change has also created unintended consequences for the overall child-care sector, including challenges for providers and ongoing concerns about long-term access to infant and toddler care.

  • The policy highlights a tension between broad public access goals and the economic strains on private caregivers and centers serving younger children.

Schools Borrowing, But Not For Education

Greenberg: The Irony – Ineligible Blacks May Fund SF Reparations

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Gavin Newsom is advancing a high-stakes battle over mid-decade congressional redistricting, aiming to override the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission and hand that power back to the legislature.

  • His goal: create a special election this November that would replace the citizen-drawn maps and let politicians redraw districts — potentially securing up to five more Democratic seats.

  • This move directly confronts the initiative reforms of 2008 and 2010, when voters stripped lawmakers of this redistricting authority to protect democratic representation.

  • Prominent opponents—including Charles Munger Jr., Steve Hilton, and Arnold Schwarzenegger—warn that this gambit could backfire at the ballot box or in court.

  • The article argues that historically skeptical California voters may revolt against this power grab, especially if Newsom appears to undermine voter-driven reforms.

  • Ultimately, what began as a strategic response to red-state gerrymanders may turn into a self-inflicted political catastrophe for him.

Gov. Newsom Facing Calls to Resign Over Release of ‘Monster’ Convicted Serial Child Abuser

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing increasing calls to resign after Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper criticized the state’s “elderly parole program” for allowing convicted serial child rapist David Funston to be considered for release.

  • Funston terrorized Sacramento in the mid-1990s by luring very young children with candy and toys, kidnapping and assaulting them, and has been labeled “the monster parents fear most” by a local judge.

  • Under a law amended in 2020, inmates over age 50 who have served at least 20 years become eligible for parole hearings, a change critics say has allowed violent sex offenders like Funston to seek early release.

  • Sheriff Cooper and other law enforcement voices argue that Funston—and others like him—should not be let out given the severity of their crimes and community safety concerns.

  • Attempts in the California Legislature to tighten parole eligibility for violent offenders were blocked by Democrats, deepening the backlash.

  • Opponents of the early-release policy say the governor and lawmakers have prioritized this program over public safety, provoking outrage from families and law enforcement who believe it endangers communities.

S.F. Homeless Nonprofit CEO Charged with Nine Felonies for Allegedly Misappropriating over $1M in Public Funds

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The former chief executive of a San Francisco homeless services nonprofit, the United Council for Human Services (UCHS), has been charged with nine felony counts for allegedly stealing and misusing public funds meant for helping vulnerable people.

  • The charges include misappropriation of public funds, grand theft, and filing false California tax returns, and stem from an investigation into how more than $1.2 million was handled between 2019 and 2023.

  • Prosecutors allege the former CEO, Gwendolyn Westbrook, used her near-exclusive control over the nonprofit’s finances to make unauthorized payments to herself, drain cash through questionable withdrawals, and submit fraudulent reimbursements.

  • Court documents also indicate that a substantial amount of money remains unaccounted for, and investigators say the funds were not tied to legitimate organizational expenses.

  • UCHS had received millions in taxpayer-backed city contracts to provide housing and services for the homeless, and this case is likely to renew scrutiny over how such public dollars are managed in San Francisco.

  • Westbrook is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges and could face significant penalties if convicted.

JD Vance Discovers $7B in Fraud in California

Izzy Gardon, Newsom's government-paid director of communications, responded without any redaction: "Hey Susan, thanks for reaching out. Respectfully, f*** off."

The governor's comms staff is getting more and more immature by the day.

Well at least he said respectfully

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom has previously spoken publicly about having dyslexia, saying he was diagnosed as a child and has struggled with reading.

  • Recently, RealClearPolitics reporter Susan Crabtree reached out to Newsom’s communications team asking for documentation or proof of that dyslexia diagnosis.

  • According to screenshots shared online, Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, responded to her request with a profane email telling her to “f-*** off.”

  • The exchange has drawn public attention and criticism for its tone, especially since it involved a question about a personal claim made by a public official.

  • Crabtree defended her inquiry, saying Americans deserve verifiable answers rather than “expletive-laced deflections,” and vowed to continue asking the questions.

  • The incident comes amid broader scrutiny of Newsom’s remarks about his learning difficulties and his public statements during a recent book tour.

Poll on Governor’s Race

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • A new Emerson College poll shows that the 2026 California governor’s race has no clear frontrunner, with a Republican candidate currently leading the field among likely voters, a notable shift in a deeply Democratic state.

  • Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host running as a Republican, is in first place with about 17% support, followed closely by Republican Chad Bianco and Democrat Eric Swalwell at around 14% each.

  • Democratic leaders such as Katie Porter and Tom Steyer lag behind with single-digit support, while roughly 21% of voters remain undecided, though that share has decreased from earlier polls.

  • The wide voter spread reflects deep fragmentation among Democrats, with multiple candidates failing to consolidate support around a single choice.

  • Governor Gavin Newsom’s approval rating has also slipped to around 44%, highlighting broader voter dissatisfaction in the state.

  • Respondents cited high housing costs, affordability concerns, and community issues such as data centers near homes as major concerns influencing how they view the governor’s leadership and their choice for his successor.

How Clueless is The Democratic Governor?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed a crowd in Atlanta during a book tour stop by trying to relate to the audience, saying “I’m just like you. I’m a 960 SAT guy. I can’t read,” which critics say was demeaning and rude to the predominantly Black audience he was speaking to.

  • Many commentators and conservative figures accused Newsom of making a racially insensitive remark by equating academic struggles with being “like” Black Americans, saying the comment played into offensive stereotypes.

  • Newsom’s communications director and supporters rejected the backlash as political “manufactured outrage,” noting that Newsom has discussed his lifelong struggles with dyslexia and low test scores in other settings.

  • Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who was on stage with Newsom, defended him, saying the comment was awkward but meant to be a personal reflection rather than a racial comment.

  • The controversy has drawn attention because Newsom is on a national tour ahead of potential future political ambitions, keeping him in the spotlight.

  • The backlash reflects ongoing cultural and political tensions over how public figures attempt to connect with diverse audiences.
