A divided Supreme Court ruled late today that Arizona may require proof of citizenship when registering new voters for future elections.

What You Need To Know

šŸ“ŒThe Republican National Committee filed an emergency appeal to the Court.

šŸ“ŒBut the court refused a GOP request to block voting in November by more than 40,000 people who had already registered without providing such proof.

šŸ“ŒThe vote was 5-4 on allowing limited enforcement of the law (with conservative justices in the majority).

šŸ“ŒJustice Amy Coney Barrett joined the three liberal justices in dissent.

šŸ“ŒThe court did not explain its ruling.

More Background

  • In the 2020 election, President Biden beat former President Trump in Arizona by just over 10,000 votes.

  • The case touches upon a widespread, unverified GOP talking point that illegal immigrants vote in U.S. elections.

KAMALA HARRISā€™ BIG NIGHT

Tonight Vice President Kamala Harris will accept the Democratic nomination for President on the final night of the Democratic National Convention. Sheā€™s expected to frame her vision for Americans as a ā€œNew Way Forwardā€.

Surprise Guests?

Confirmed guests tonight: the pop star Pink and civil rights leader, Reverand Al Sharpton. Plus, the grapevine's buzzing with whispers of some "major" surprise appearances. Who could it be: Beyonce? Taylor Swift? The secret is being held so tight that only a few high-profile folks know whoā€™s coming.

Guess weā€™ll all find out soon.

ā€˜Pay-to-Playā€™ Politics

NewsNation's Chris Cuomo has been on the ground in Chicago, diving deep into the convention's buzz. Last night, he shed light on the hefty corporate sway shadowing both major parties. According to Cuomo, it's a classic case of "pay-to-play" politics, with both Republicans and Democrats in the mix. Got two minutes? Check out his coverage right here:

RECESSION FEARS STILL LOOM

Talk about ā€œMath Not Mathingā€ā€¦.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has revised its job report, revealing 818,000 fewer jobs than initially reported from April 2023 to March 2024. This significant miscalculation likely sets the stage for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September.

The revision comes at a time when job-seeking is at a ten-year high (4.3% national unemployment rate). Here in California, we have an unemployment rate of 5.2% (one of the highest in the nation)

CRAZY BRAWL AT THE PADRES GAME

The New York Mets have swung into San Diego to face off against the Padres tonight, but it's not just the game that's getting people talking. Buzz is still flying around about a wild brawl between two fans at Petco Field the other night.

Quick Catchup (if you donā€™t want to watch the beatdown)

  • One fan, wearing a black T-shirt and black pants, was being taunted by another fan wearing a white tank top in the row above him.

  • Thatā€™s when the beatdown - went down and judging by the video, it didnā€™t end well for the guy in the wife-beater.

  • Both guys got kicked out by security.

  • SDPD said no arrests were made and no one wanted to press charges.

  • This is the third brawl at Petco this year.

Padres are still in the huntā€¦

These fans missed a good game too-

āš¾the Padres came back in the 8th inning to beat the twins 7 to 5.

āš¾They remain the top wildcard team in the National League.

FBI RAIDS HOME OF OC SUPERVISORā€™S DAUGHTER

Right now in Orange County, the FBI is raiding a home in Tustin bought last year by Rhiannon Do, the 23-year-old daughter of Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do. This comes after the county filed a fraud lawsuit against her last week.

An FBI spokesperson tells LAist the agency is executing a search warrant at the property Thursday afternoon.

Joshua Tree Campground Shuts Down Amid šŸInvasion

Planning a trip to Joshua Tree National Park? You might need a rethink for now.

The National Park Service has temporarily shut down the park's Cottonwood area because of the threat of bees.

Why Drastic Measures?

šŸThe Cottonwood area is home to a visitor center, parking, bathrooms, and 62 campsites.

šŸBees, like other wildlife, seek out water sources as temperatures climb, often targeting condensation from air conditioners, sweat, and even bathrooms, leading to swarms across the park.

šŸThe closure aims to cut down on water moisture, which attracts bees during the desert's blistering summer heat.
