Breaking News: Newsom Abandons Prop 47 Fight

In a dramatic twist reminiscent of a telenovela, last night Governor Newsom and Democratic lawmakers abandoned their plans to introduce an alternative anti-crime measure on the November ballot.

Republicans criticized this as a last-minute "shady attempt" to confuse voters, following Newsom and Democrats' initial failure to eliminate the Prop 47 reform ballot measure.

Democrats Failed to Get Votes

 Lawmakers were scheduled to vote on Newsom’s alternative measure tonight in Sacramento but instead, the Governor withdrew the bill Tuesday night, blaming it on a “tight deadline” with the 4^th of July holiday looming.

But according to the LA Times, this is smoke and mirrors. The Times said it would have never passed, writing:

… although Newsom said his measure had the necessary votes to pass, three Democratic lawmakers said it lacked support — an astonishing political miscalculation in a body where Democrats hold a sizable supermajority.

What’s Next

📌With this politicking now appearing to be over, voters will get their say on the Prop 47 reform bill come November.

📌A reminder this entire initiative is in response to the decade-old law that reclassified some nonviolent felonies as misdemeanors, which is believed to have contributed to the rise in crime across California.

📌Political experts had said that Democratic leaders (ie Newsom) didn’t want this on the ballot, fearing voters would turn out and turn against Democrat candidates.

Where’s Newsom?

The Governor is in Washington, DC with President Biden who as we all know, finds himself in a bit of a predicament right now. CNN reports that Biden faces a genuine threat to his reelection bid and has summoned Democratic governors to the White House.

Critics are also speculating whether the Governor had abandoned the Prop 47 fight due to additional pressing issues, like his own positioning for the White House should Biden step aside.
