COUNTDOWN TO NOVEMBER

Only 97 days left until the November election, and it’s been a pretty chill summer for the two guys running for the US Senate in California.

Everyone’s been laser-focused on the wild presidential race, and we should find out soon who Kamala Harris is eyeing for VP.

CALIFORNIA RACE

But what about the Senate showdown here in California? Can Steve Garvey take on Adam Schiff in a heavily blue state like California and convince voters that he is their choice come November 5? Both men are vying for the open seat to replace the late Dianne Feinstein in the Senate.

A not-so-official online poll by KTLA 5 News shows Garvey leading Schiff, but again, this appears to be just for kicks. Besides, the fall debate schedule hasn’t been released yet and both men have been keeping a relatively low profile.

We’re curious—what do you think about this race and the candidates?

BORDER CRISIS: FAMILY SEPARATIONS STILL HAPPENING

Even though President Biden pledged to stop the practice of separating migrant families at the border—something his team criticized the Trump administration for—a new study shows it’s still happening.

CBS Sacramento reports that UCLA’s latest research has found the practice is ongoing.

COLON CANCER BREAKTHROUGH

Big news for Palo Alto-based Guardant Health: the FDA approved the company’s blood test to screen for colorectal cancer.

Who can take it

The blood test called “Shield” was approved for people aged 45 and older with an "average risk" of colon cancer.

Background

  • Shield detects colorectal cancer by detecting DNA shed by tumors in blood samples.

  • Results take about two weeks

  • It’s already commercially available, but FDA approval will help broaden availability and insurance coverage.

  • Colonoscopies are still considered the gold standard for screening.

 🗓THIS DAY IN CALI-HISTORY

On this day in 1932, amidst the throes of the Great Depression, the Summer Olympics blazed to life in Los Angeles. Chosen by default as the host city, with no other contenders, the games saw participation from just 37 countries. Los Angeles later dazzled the world again by hosting the Olympics in 1984 and is set to make history once more in 2028.
