$25 Million 'Trump Proof' Fund: Resistance or Rhetoric?
California’s latest (and ongoing) political saga puts millions of voters—divided, passionate, and often overlooked—at its center. While lawmakers convene for this week’s Special Session to brace for “Trump 2.0,” the real stakes aren’t confined to courtrooms or legislative chambers but are deeply rooted in the lives of everyday Californians.
$25 Million Legal Slush Fund
Governor Newsom has called for a $25 million legal fund to “Trump-proof” the state against potential federal overreach. The problem? That overreach hasn’t even materialized yet, but the Governor is already gearing up for a fight.
Let’s Get Real: Math Ain’t Mathin’
It’s time to get real: How in the world will California pay for this?
The state is already grappling with a significant budget deficit—an estimated $27.6 billion.
To make matters worse, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office projects an additional $2 billion shortfall for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Translation: California is broke
What Will $25 Million Get Californians?
Let’s be real: $25 million won’t stretch far if the battle heats up. During the first Trump administration, California burned through $42 million on over 120 lawsuits. So, this fund might be more symbolic than practical.
Governor Newsom says the money will help defend California against potential federal cuts to climate initiatives, disaster aid, immigration, and reproductive rights.
This week, Attorney General Rob Bonta even declared California will remain a haven for women seeking abortions.
As they say, failing to plan is planning to fail.

In our last newsletter, we told you about Governor Newsom's plan to reinstate electric vehicle rebates in California if the federal government eliminates them. Well, it seems his call to exclude Tesla owners isn’t setting well with Democrats.
Moderate Congressman Ro Khanna criticized the move, stating that while EV tax credits make sense, excluding Elon Musk and Tesla for likely political reasons is just foolish.
California Rep. Ro Khanna on Gavin Newsom's EV subsidy that would exclude @Tesla vehicles:
“Tesla created the electric vehicle revolution — I don't think politics should interfere with manufacturing or an issue of our national competitiveness.”

Voters Forgotten in the Fight
State Republican leaders spent this week arguing that Governor Newsom and the state’s leadership have lost touch with the people who matter most—the voters. California’s electorate is far from unified and doesn’t seem fully on board with “Trump-proofing” the state.
"Gavin Newsom wants to run for president. That's what this is about. He wants to fight Trump. He wants to be the progressive darling. Let's get serious about the issues affecting everyday Californians."
The divide highlights deep fault lines: one side calls for resistance to Trump and federal overreach, while the other—fueled by a growing Red Wave of Trump supporters—questions whether this is about serving the people or advancing Newsom’s presidential ambitions.
California will continue to have everyone's back — no matter what.

Newsom is asking for $25 million to "Trump-proof" California.
He doesn't want to relinquish our national lead in gas prices, housing costs, taxes, homelessness, poverty, or illegal border crossings.
In the House, I'll use every possible tool to Newsom-proof our state.

Final Thought
As Governor Newsom and Democrats march into another battle against Washington, it’s worth asking who this fight is really for—and who it leaves behind.
